This is a big day in America, finally the chicken is coming home to roost but only because she’s got a big golden egg to lay.
Two major breakthroughs happened within a few hours of each other, to possibly, seriously, signal the beginning of the end of marijuana prohibition:
A legalization law introduced to California State Legislature
US Attorney General Says Ending DEA Raids ‘Now American Policy’
Can this be real? Will on-line Poker be the next prohibition breakthrough?

Chuch MyersCongrats to Chuck Myers aka WizrdMickey for winning a seat in the L.A. Poker Classic by beating the entire field of on-line players in the Multi-Table Tournament Leaderboard from the tables of Reefer Poker. Nice work Chuck!
Chuck had cards in his blood from an early age playing rummy and cribbage with his grandmother and blackjack for pennies with his dad. Poker first caught his eye when he met up with buddies on a Riverboat Casino in the early 90′s on the Mississippi River in Wisconsin. Now he plays daily online at Reefer Poker and in North Florida Poker rooms.
His major Accomplishments are live wins in the 2007 ESPN Radio Shootout on the Sun Cruz Casino Jacksonville Fl, 2007 Easter Tournament at the Beau Rivage Casino In Biloxi Ms. He has also played in (2) World Series of Poker No Limit Events in Las Vegas 2006 and 2007.
When not playing poker, Myers likes to play golf, play racquetball, and hit the beach.
He plays an aggressive style, constantly putting pressure on his opponents, but always knowing when to put on the breaks. He gives a lot of credit to his crew of poker playing buddies and reading books by Dan Harrington. His poker name, Wizardmickey, or wizrdmickey, is based on his favorite Disney character the Sorceror Mickey Mouse.

Carnaval 2009The Brazilian Carnival, properly spelled Carnaval, is an annual festival in Brazil held four days before Ash Wednesday, the day of fasting and repentance that marks the beginning of Lent. On certain days of Lent, Roman Catholics and some other Christians traditionally abstained from the consumption of meat and poultry — hence the term “carnival,” from carnelevare, “to remove (literally, “raise”) meat.” Carnival celebrations are believed to have roots in the pagan festival of Saturnalia, which, adapted to Christianity, became a farewell to certain pleasures of the flesh in a season of religious discipline to practice repentance and prepare for Christ’s death and resurrection.
I love Rio de Janeiro but years ago I grew out of the the mob-party scene and now prefer more intimate festivities with good friends and lots of delectable goodies, in the comfort of a rain-forest surrounded private residence, some 45 minute drive outside the city of Sao Paulo. This year my birthday coincided with the first official day of Carnaval, here in Brazil, so we got the festival started with a 5 liter keg of Heineken Beer and some nicely rolled reefers of regular grade Brazil maconha. The fine summer day was enjoyed around the swimming pool while playing some 8 ball on a decent old snooker table, talking about the upcoming BSOP (Brazilian Series of Poker) and naturally football (soccer).
Monday was the 3 day of Carnaval and a perfectly clear, sunny day to enjoy the fabulous patio veranda of a friend’s newly completed dream-home, built into the side of a mountain, overlooking lakes and waterfall, totally surrounded by lush rain forest. The churascaria (bar-b-que) was grilling meats continually for the entire afternoon and well into the evening, to accompany the big buffet of salads and rice with black beans. Cold beer and powerful clear Cachaca were pouring freely. A television with surround sound provided the music and live dancing from the Sambadrome in RIo as all Brazilians cheer on their favorite Samba school. When sunset approached the host invited us to a special smoking deck on the top of his house, where we proceeded to smoke a specially prepared, extra-large Carnaval reefer of some dank chronic, as we watched the sun set over the jungle.

The High Seas has a whole new meaning in a recent KPBS report:

Coast Guard officials in San Diego it’s the season for smuggling marijuana up the coast of Mexico’s Baja California. US Coast Guard boats have fished more than 14,000 pounds of marijuana out of the ocean off the coast of northern Baja California since November. People onboard the boats ditch the marijuana over the side as the Coast Guard approaches. Then they make a beeline back into Mexican waters so the Coast Guard can’t nab them.

Another waste of time and tax-payer money that would be eliminated once California legalizes marijuana.

Newsweek published an article on their website called “Reefer Madness” (print for March 2 issue) so they could weigh-in on the Michael Phelps publicity that has surrounded the infamous Olympic bong-hit photo, they share insight on the over-reactions and report about the hypocrisy related to the issue. This Michael Phelps story just keeps on smokin…
Here’s an excerpt from the Newsweek Reefer Madness article:

on the morning of Feb. 7, police used a battering ram to smash through the front door of the house in Columbia where the party had taken place threemonths earlier. “Freeze, motherf—ers!” the cops allegedly yelled as they rushed in, guns drawn. They handcuffed and hauled away the students inside and brought dogs to sniff the house for drugs. (The day’s take, according to defense lawyers: less than a gram of marijuana)
From the moment the picture leaked, Phelps fell subject to the iron laws of absurdity that govern the rise and fall of American celebrities. And in Richland County, S.C., the law is Sheriff Leon Lott. Blond and photogenic, the theatrical ex-vice cop lives to bring down drug offenders and get his picture in the paper for doing so. He has appeared on “America’s Most Wanted” and as a young cop emulated Don Johnson’s character on “Miami Vice.” Locals have a saying that the most dangerous place in town is between Lott and a TV camera. It is also thought not to be a good idea to get in the way of the armored personnel carrier he acquired, nicknamed “The Peacemaker.” It has a .50-caliber machine gun mounted on top.

This all sounds like an Elmore Leonard novel (ie. Get Shorty) but at least it keeps people’s minds off real problems.

Hindu Kush mapThe Hindu Kush is a mountain range located in eastern and central Afghanistan and northwestern Pakistan. The Eastern Hindu Kush range, also known as the High Hindu Kush range, is mostly located in northern Pakistan. Most marijuana enthusiasts who smoke Kush (weed) would have no idea about the region or the history and culture of growing cannabis and making hashish that the Hindu Kush is famous for.
The origin of the name Hindu Kush is disputed, despite it being fairly recent, first used ca 1330. As ‘kush’ is ‘killing’ in old Persian, about the same time the cannabis strain was first introduced to Europe, coincidentally Hashish has a similar etymology, as most sources state Kush means Hindu-Killer because of the vast number of Indian slaves who perished in passing its snows while being taken by Islamic invaders. Whereas, Hashish was related to “assassin”. However, the word Kush could also be derived from a Persian word meaning “Hindu Throne” but no-matter how it was once known, now it’s the name of the most popular marijuana in popular culture and derivatives of this hardy plant are smoked on every continent, with little regard of where, why, or how this marvelous durable strain, the great granddaddy of “white widow”, came to be.
Imagine a plant that can grow in the some of the harshest environments on the planet? Geographically speaking, Kush is the westernmost extension of the Pamir Mountains, the Karakoram Range, it’s a sub-range of the Himalayas. Interestingly (side note) it’s calculated to be the geographic center of population of the world. The late great author Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park, Andromeda Strain and many more best sellers) traveled through the region in the 1980′s and wrote about it in his 1988 novel “Travels“, describing the region as so remote that locals would line the road to see foreign tourists walk past. Undoubtedly, in more recent times the spill-over from conflict in Afghanistan has changed some of that but the production of cannabis and manufacturing of Hashish flourishes as never before, due to demand.
The mountains of the Hindu Kush system diminish in height as they stretch westward: toward the middle, near Kabul, they extend from 4,500 to 6,000 meters (14,700 feet to 19,100 feet); in the west, they attain heights of 3,500 to 4,000 meters (11,500 feet to 13,000 feet). The average altitude of the Hindu Kush is 4,500 meters (14,700 feet). The Hindu Kush system stretches about 966 kilometers (600 miles) laterally, and its median north-south measurement is about 240 kilometers (150 miles). Only about 600 kilometers (370 miles) of the Hindu Kush system is called the Hindu Kush mountains but the entire region produces some of the best marijuana and hashish in the world.

purple kushKush is one of the world’s oldest cannabis indica strains, and it has a rich, rugged history. It is believed that Hindu Kush was the first cannabis strain brought back from the ‘Orient’ to Europe by explorers, hundreds of years ago. The Eastern Hindu Kush range, also known as the High Hindu Kush range, is mostly located in northern Pakistan, however many strains have adopted the Afghani title since the region and growing culture is shared with Afghanistan.
This sweet smelling plant is a member of the Cannabis Indica family, which leads the plant to be short and squat in appearance. Some forms of Kush, however, are in fact a hybrid between Cannabis Indica and Cannabis Sativa…which leads to greater harvests. Varieties of the Kush plant include,(But are not limited to), Hindu Kush, OG Kush, Purple Kush, Master Kush. Many crossbreeds exist as well.
Kush is an excellent plant to grow indoors, as it stays short but produces high yields (around 400g per square meter sea of green) . The taste is earthy and spicy, and the smoke feels a bit like hash on the lungs. The high you get is a powerful body buzz that starts in the temples and moves down, making your whole body tingle. Lasts for hours. Kush is rich in THC (up to 20%) and flowers in as little as 7 weeks. It is relatively easy to grow, provided that you give it the respect it deserves. When you grow and smoke Hindu Kush you become part of a history that is much bigger than yourself, and that’s something to think about when you’re puffing away.
