Once upon a time there was a giant mountain named Whistler all by itself in the coastal mountains of British Columbia, Canada. Then one day some smart dudes from Aspen, Colorado, came along and bought the mountain next door, then built a mega-resort at the base and installed high-speed quad chairlifts straight up to the top, reaching just high enough to un-seat Jackson Hole, Wyoming for the most vertical drop, of any ski resort in North America.
Back in the day, when I was young and cocky and full of piss and vinegar, my friends and I would hike past the top lodge at the newly constructed Blackcomb, under the out-of-bounds ropes, past the “ski at your own risk” signs, remove our skis to put them over our shoulders, then trudge up a steep incline of snow stairs for about 45 minutes until we reached the top of a massive cornice, overlooking a beautiful glacier with a vista of the awesome coastal mountain range. This back bowl would be filled with fresh, deep powder snow, which is precisely why we went to all this trouble, since the in-bounds ski terrain was plenty challenging enough but this particular location had something that regular ski areas do not have – a cornice (an overhanging mass of windblown snow or ice usually on a ridge).
This was the birth of extreme-skiing although we didn’t know it, or think-up the cool name but this is where it all started, and why it happened is because to get to the fresh un-tracked snow the next person that hiked-in needed to climb a little higher up the cornice, which meant dropping in (as we called it) from a higher position, or if you were a total adrenaline freak/lunatic you could choose your height all the way up to about a 90 foot drop from the top.

free_marc_emery.jpgMarc Emery, known as the Prince of Pot is a Canadian cannabis and libertarian activist, Vancouver retail store owner, editor of Cannabis Culture Magazine, as well as a former cannabis seed seller. The U.S. government considers Marc to be a drug dealer and want him extradited from Canada and behind bars. Over several years Marc negotiated a plea deal for a five year sentence in US Federal Prison and this month it’s expected that the sentence will be handed down in the Seattle Federal Court of Ricardo Martinez.
In his own words, from “Why I’m Cutting a Deal” Marc explains why he accepted the guilty plea.

lawyer framed my options thusly: To challenge the extradition would be a lost cause and result in my extradition to Seattle to stand trial on three counts: conspiracy to manufacture, conspiracy to distribute, and conspiracy to money launder. Even waiting for my trial in Sea-Tac jail would take approximately 6 months to a year. Sentencing on the money laundering involves a mandatory minimum 10 years in federal prison. It also comes with the possibility of a substantial financial penalty, perhaps as high as $250,000 or up to $1 million in fines. If there is a financial penalty attached to my conviction, I cannot be transferred to a Canadian prison while any amount owing is outstanding. To challenge all three charges involves a potential jail time of 10 years plus 5 years plus 5 years plus $250,000 or more in fines.

Marc Emery recently completed a “Farewell Tour of Canada” and spoke to groups in major cities all across the country. Talking to people about the madness of the prohibition and the consequences on our society. Marc’s efforts for cannabis activism are outstanding , he’s been a true maverick for changing the way people think about the prohibition of marijuana and we should all do whatever we can to help his cause by joining in or promoting any of the protests listed on Cannabis Culture.
